Transport planning 'essential for businesses'

Businesses have been reminded of the importance of transport planning by one expert.

Advantage, a travel management organisation, has advised businesses to stick to their transport budgets.

Norman Gage, director of business travel at the firm, explained that most small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have historically stuck to a transport planning financial strategy.

He claimed this has better prepared SMEs for the current economic climate, which has seen "big fat cats" struggle, since they have spent and not taken account of it.

"They always have been [aware], as the companies with a travel spend of £150,000 or less know that they can only do an infinitive number of journeys," he remarked.

"If they can reduce the cost of a journey then they can do an extra journey," he added.

According to Barclaycard Commercial research, some 40 per cent of SMEs admitted they do not have a business travel policy.
