UK drivers braced for more wintry weather

The busy Christmas period may be over, but transport planning bosses could still face a hectic few weeks as the UK braces itself for more snowfall.

Met Office officials have issued a severe weather warning across many parts of the UK as New Year approaches and motoring groups are urging drivers to take care on the roads.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists said the problems posed by the wintry conditions are likely to be compounded by drivers travelling to visit relatives or bag a bargain in the sales.

Chief examiner Peter Rodger said both leisure travellers and commercial vehicle drivers will need to take extra care and plan their journeys carefully during the next few days.

"Our message to drivers is to assess the type of road you're driving on. Going too fast is dangerous, but going too slowly can cause real difficulties as well," he advised.

The group issued a similar warning in the run-up to the Christmas period, when heavy snowfall and icy conditions caused chaos on many of the UK's road networks.
