Those in transport planning and logistics outsourcing have been advised on how two issues are causing embarrassment to the UK sector.
Following the House of Commons Transport Select Committee's report on the Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA), a spokeswoman for the Freight Transport Association (FTA) looked at two particular areas relating to safety.
Jo Tanner, director of communications for the industry body, said unsafe trucks registered abroad were a problem to be taken into account, as were exhausted drivers behind the wheel.
"The safety of our roads has to be the number one priority and our continuing concern is that safety standards are being ridden rough-shod over by rogue operators from overseas."
She added that this was giving the whole sector a bad name despite the fact the UK was largely running services that are "considered to be the gold standard" when it comes to compliance.
The FTA represents British enterprises of all sizes including multi-national public companies and those in supply chain process improvement.
