Heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures may be bringing chaos to the UK, but hauliers are continuing to ensure that life goes on as normal, it has been claimed.
The Road Haulage Association (RHA) said the UK economy is likely to experience millions of pounds in lost revenue as a result of the current weather conditions.
Hauliers are also facing damaging falls in income as they struggle with icy conditions and road closures, with many requiring extra drivers and vehicles to complete deliveries on time.
Despite the hardship, most supermarket shelves around the country remain stacked, factories are still running and filling stations have adequate stocks of fuel.
RHA spokesperson Kate Gibbs said this was largely down to the "unsung heroes" of Britain's haulage industry.
"We have just been through a year that for many members has been financially crippling. Yet hauliers are still delivering the UK economy," she commented.
Transport planning bosses are unlikely to see any letup in the difficult conditions in the near future, with the Met Office predicting that the snow and sub-zero temperatures will continue into next week.
