UK roads braced for Christmas traffic chaos

Efficient transport planning could be vital this Christmas as Britain's road network braces itself for the traditional holiday increase in traffic.

According to intelligent driving services provider Trafficmaster, hauliers, commuters and leisure travellers are likely to experience severe delays on the roads this festive season.

The firm pointed out that poor weather and shorter daylight hours combined with frequent shopping trips and the general holiday getaway means December is always a busy time.

It highlighted December 18th and 23rd, when commercial, commuter and leisure traffic reaches its peak, as the two busiest days of the festive period.

The company's data manager Graham Smith said journey times could double across many main routes in the UK, with wet and unsettled weather potentially making things worse.

"We'd encourage anyone travelling in the run-up to Christmas to plan their journey in advance and get the latest traffic information," he advised.

According to tyre retail website mytyres.co.uk, the heavy increase in rainfall during the early months of December has already made conditions more treacherous on the roads.

The group advised drivers to take extra care behind the wheel and keep a regular check on tyre pressures and tread depths to avoid a potential accident this Christmas.
