UK commercial vehicle sales are still suffering from the effects of the recession as logistics firms continue to defer investment in new trucks, the latest figures have revealed.
According to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), just 2,063 new HGVs were registered in November, down 60 per cent from the previous month.
This marks a drop of more than 36 per cent for the rolling year, suggesting transport planning bosses are reluctant to invest in new vehicles, despite signs of economic recovery.
Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT, said: "Heavy trucks, down 60 per cent in November, are still suffering badly as a result of weak business confidence."
He added that it is therefore vital that the government's pre-Budget Report is used to further enhance consumer confidence and bolster business investment.
The figures also showed that van registrations stabilised in November, falling 0.8 per cent from the previous month but still down 36 per cent on the rolling year.
Meanwhile, the SMMT revealed separately that new car registrations climbed 57.6 per cent last month compared with November 2008, largely due to the effects of the scrappage scheme.
