A Wiltshire-based company has moved to increase efficiency and improve its cost reduction by taking on three new Volvo FH tractor units.

Waste management contractor Hills Waste Solutions took delivery of the FH-500 vehicles this week and has already benefitted from an improvement in fuel consumption.

The three trucks are all equipped with Volvo's Dunafleet Operate package, which gives transport bosses the ability to monitor fuel usage and vehicle location.

Peter Moore, transport operations manager at Hills, said both the company and its drivers were pleased with the new vehicles.

"While it's early days, they are already showing an improvement of around eight per cent in fuel consumption," he commented.

"To best utilise and schedule the trucks the drivers are required to do overnights. Our drivers are very happy with the new Volvos," he added.

Earlier this month, British value retailer Iceland also turned to Volvo to help boost its business, ordering 70 new FM trucks to help cope with the Christmas shopping rush.

However, the manufacturer continues to suffer from the effects of the recession, with new truck deliveries down 16 per cent in November compared with the previous month.
