'World-class' UK transport centre gets construction go-ahead

Transport planning chiefs may welcome plans to build a new world-class technical facility designed to spur research and development in the automotive industry.

The innovITS - ADVANCE centre, based at Nuneaton, Warwickshire was today (Monday) given the go-ahead by planners.

It is hoped the project will pave the way for future research and engineering that could help cut accidents and casualty rates, improve efficiency and reduce traffic congestion.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the start of construction at the site, innovITS chief executive Phil Pettitt said intelligent transportation systems offer "significant potential" for road users around the world.

However, he said a lack of dedicated, safe and well-equipped testing infrastructure has proved an obstacle to new product development.

"The creation of innovITS - ADVANCE, in collaboration with MIRA and the Transport Research Laboratory, aims to remove this roadblock to progress and unlock the benefits of a safer, more fuel-efficient, and sustainable future for transportation."

News of the development comes after the Freight Transport Association recently urged the government to continue investing in the UK's transport infrastructure to ensure the country remains competitive.
