Marks & Spencer (M&S) saved £35 million last year by improving the efficiency of its supply chain.

The British retailer embarked on a programme of warehouse consolidation alongside numerous efficiency projects.

Total investment from the company in supply chain and technology last year rose to £194 million, up from £188 million the previous year.

In its results for the year to March 27th, the firm announced the first phase of its warehouse consolidation programme was on schedule, with 21 of its 110 sites closed.

"Our new warehouse in Bradford opened this month, on time and on budget. We have identified a second site in the Midlands which will be a combined national distribution centre and a dedicated e-commerce facility," a company statement said.

Earlier this year Becky Reuber, strategic management professor at Rotman School of Management at the University of Tornto, told the Financial Post that companies had to focus on the efficiency of their supply chains to increase their profitability.
