New airport will give logistics a major boost

The proposed new airport on the Thames estuary will bring a major boost to freight and rail logistics, it has been claimed.

Lord Foster, an architect and one of the scheme's biggest supporters, feels that a new airport will bring a much needed shot in the arm to not just the aviation industry but the economy as a whole.

Foster + Partners has teamed up with Halcrow and Volterra to put forward proposals for the scheme, which will cost around £50 billion and provide services for around 150 million passengers.

"We believe that the economic case for the Thames Hub is compelling as Britain is already losing out to expanding European hubs. Our proposal comprehensively addresses the infrastructure needed to maximise the advantages of a new airport," Lord Foster stated.

"The Thames Hub and proposed new airport project is part of a wider UK-wide initiative to bring together rail, freight logistics, aviation, energy generation and transmission, flood protection and regional development."

Despite this, some opposition to the scheme exists with the GMB union calling the plans "plain daft" and called for any extra runway to be constructed at Heathrow instead.
